How To Fix A Dead Lawn

No one likes the look of a dead lawn. Sometimes a portion of the lawn may burn out or dies and appears lifeless. A dead lawn may be caused by lack of watering, improper mowing, thatch build-up, disease, drought or infestation of insects.

The most important thing first is to determine the cause of the problem of the dead lawn. Reviving your dead lawn is to continuously take care of it. A lawn that is well watered, mowed properly and free of weeds will recover faster.

How To Revive Dead Grass:

Reviving Small Dead Patches:

  • Check for grubs and, if necessary, apply insecticide
  • Clip dead patches and decrease watering for fungal infection
  • Decrease watering, dethatch, and leave clippings if you are in a drought.
  • When brown grass starts regenerating, water the lawn for few days in the morning time and sprinkle fertilizer.

Reviving Large Dead Patches:

  • Aerate compacted soil.
  • Move a power-rake over the dead patches.
  • Remove Thatch with the help of a hand rake.
  • Spread seed over dead patches after treating compacted soil.
  • Use a rotary spreader to apply decomposer. Then apply lawn fertilizer.
  • Water the new grass regularly and thoroughly.

How To Fix Brown Spots In The Lawn:

When your lawn has brown spots, it means the care of your lawn is not perfect. You can fix brown spots on the lawn by following simple ways.

Dethatching the lawn will help in preventing the brown spots in the following ways:

  • Make sure the watering is perfect as per the weather conditions and grass if not water-logged.
  • Incorrect mowing causes this problem. Make sure the blades of the mower are sharp.
  • Test the soil and ensure the pH level is above 6.

Why Is My Grass Dying In Patches?

The main possible causes of grass dying in spots and patches are inclusive grub damage, fungal diseases, animal digging, salt burn, Fertilizer burn, buried rock, dog urine, heat, and drought, spilt chemicals and incorrect sprinkler coverage.

How To Revive Dead Grass Fast?

  1. Clear the dead grass area and any other debris. The grass will grow quickly and root best it comes in contact with soil.
  2. Loosen and dig the top 2 to 3 inches of soil. If the soil is poor, add compost or organic matter. The soil should be moderately soft.

Spread grass seeds over loosened soil. Select quality seed suitable for the type of soil and weather conditions in your area. Lightly tamp the surface for good seed-soil contact.

  1. Apply a small amount of fertilizer specially formulated for new grass.
  2. Mulch and water the lawn. It is very important to keep the surface continuously damp. Top the patched area with a layer of straw to avoid seed washouts and avoid evaporation. This also improves germination.
  3. Once the grass grows up to 2 inches, reduce watering to once a week. Start mowing when the grass is 4 inches long. After one year, the patched area will look the same as any other portion of the lawn. This is the best way to bring back the dead grass.

How To Repair Dead Grass

A quicker method than seeding is to fill the dead grass spot with a patch cut from a roll of grass sod. This is a fast method to repair dead grass. Cut a patch of sod grass nearly 2 inches bigger than the dead patch in the lawn.

Place this patch over the bare patch surface. Mark around the sod patch with a sharp shovel. Lift the sod patch. Remove the dead grass and healthy grass within the mark with a hand cultivator.

Remove a layer of soil below the grass. Loosen the soil within the patch area. Place the sod pad over the excavated area and compress it by walking several times over it.

Water immediately and repeat watering this area two to three times a day for several days until the sod patch is bonded with the surface and grass starts to grow.

Within a week or two, the sod patch will be indistinguishable from the rest of the lawn. The little colour difference will disappear soon.
