How To Plant Grass Seed On Existing Lawn

If you want to maintain the lawn always lush green and healthy, it is a must for the person to give time and effort to the lawn. In spring and summer, one has to do different activities, such as fertilization and mowing, so that the lawn will look graceful. The late summer period it a bit busy, and this is the perfect time to focus on the law. It will help in bringing the best results for the lawn for the next upcoming seasons by planting the seeds in the lawn by overseeding.

Appropriate steps to plant the grass seeds into the lawns

Step 1:

First of all, cut the grass by 2 inches, with the help of the lawnmower. Make sure to keep the heights of grass small so that raking and seeding will become easier and more comfortable.

Step 2:

Through Rake, take out the accumulated thatch present on the lawn. If you do not have a rake, then you can use the dethatched, which is pulled behind the mower. Now, run the dethatcher or rake in the entire lawn, so that the thatch can be removed from the lawn.

Step 3:

Let the lawn breathe to settle down the soil well. By letting the soil breathe, it helps in letting the soil absorb water properly, and adds air to the soil. Now, one should use an aerator, which is designed to be pulled behind the riding mower. Now use the aerator on the entire lawn.

Step 4:

Now it is the time to spread fertilizers in the field to the entire area, like 8-8-8. To do the work, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions properly. The ratio in which one should put the fertilizer is 3.8 pounds per 1000 square feet area.

Step 5:

Apply the seeds after fertilization on the lawn with the help of the rotary spreader. For the appropriate application of seeds, look, and follow the guide provided by the manufacturer. Spread 2-4 pounds of seeds in 1000 square feet area.

Step 6:

In the starting days like 10-14 days, make sure to give appropriate water to the grass 2-3 times a day. After this, the grass will properly start germinating. After growing the grass, then water the grass once a day to balance the moisture. Make sure the soil is a little dry when you are going to water grass again.

Required things for seeding:

  • Rake
  • Mower
  • 8-8-8 fertilizer
  • Aerator
  • Rotary Spreader
  • Dethatcher

Make sure to oversee the grass, as Bermuda is for the summer season, from March to September. The winter season grass is fescue, which should be overseeded in the late summer period. Make sure not to mow the lawn unless the grass takes the height of 4 to 5 inches.
